JUST TAKE A DEEP BREATHAward winning sculptor Craig MacDonald has a show running at Kick Gallery ‘Memento‘ This latest show follows on from his 2010 exhibition ‘Rocket Science‘. Mr MacDonald works are standout, his works live so well in three dimensions it’s hard to flatten the descriptives to words, except perhaps to say wow, they are seriously inspired. His use of bronze is cleverly hidden by an overlay of pure originality. Each piece in this show is so filled with imagination and exquisite craft that one finds several views are still not adequate. MacDonalds’ show runs until December 10.

In February this year, MacDonald was awarded the Montalto Sculpture Prize. MacDonald received the $20,000 award ahead of a strong field of other significant recognised Australian sculptors. The winning work ‘Witness’ was described by Montalto as “‘Hovering just above the surface of the ground, Witness appears as if from another time – aged and totem like, its presence and movement is a reminder that time is not static and what has been seen before can be witnessed again” Witness is on display at the ‘Memento‘ exhibition. Love + Other Drugs! Theo Jansen: Strandbeest

Posted: May 20th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Artist, Love + Other Drugs!, Theo Jansen | Tags: , , , | Comments Off

Our minds are wonderfilled things, they literally make us the type of person we are. A balanced – or unbalanced in most cases – blend of chemicals, memories, electrified thoughts, lessons and beliefs. For some of us Love is a powerfully personal emotion, for Theo Jansen it is an all encompassing drive, a drive to originate a world filled with creatures of his own evolution. It seems that Jansen has fallen in love with a thought. Strandbeest! Each generation of his “Strandbeests” is subject to the forces of evolution, with successive forms moving forward, becoming more highly developed.

God Like Jansen has ignited his own evolution, creating creatures that grow into their environment, Jansen’s Strandbeests harness all that nature is able to throw at them. Jansen has been working for more than 20 years to create sculptures that move in eerily lifelike ways. Our favorite piece has the ability to carry passengers – Animaris Rhinozeros - a two ton giant which can be moved by one person via a clever system of impulses based on compressed air stored in soda bottles. The walking sculptures seem alive in motion, each leg articulating in such a way that the body is steady and level. The creatures incorporate primitive logic gates that are used to reverse the it’s direction if it senses danger, water or loose sand.

The clouds stimulate my imagination and sometimes I just sit somewhere gazing up and dreaming. Your head is also a computer. When you’re dreaming you’re simulating a world in which you are living. It’s all interpretations of the real worldTJ Read the full article »»»»
