Sculptor: Mozart Guerra

So we have a theme going on, Bastille Day, more precisely, what Bastille Day means to we  none French! The obvious celebration aside, the modern French Republic has offered the galaxy more space than any other nation to be of an artistic mind. Artists from all over the planet have gravitated to France to freely express and be inspired. In this vein Mozart Guerra, Scuplteur! Guerra was born in Recife, Brazil in 1962, he studied architecture at University Federal of Pernambuco in Brazil, obtaining his degree in 1986. Guerra worked as a set designer in theatre, cinema and television. Mozart lives and works as a sculptor in Paris since 1992 and has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in galleries and art fairs in Brazil, France, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Luxembourg and Italy.  Through his wondrous creations, the Brazilian sculptor Mozart Guerra seeks to show the public a skewed perception of the world. Love + Other Drugs! Theo Jansen: Strandbeest

Our minds are wonderfilled things, they literally make us the type of person we are. A balanced – or unbalanced in most cases – blend of chemicals, memories, electrified thoughts, lessons and beliefs. For some of us Love is a powerfully personal emotion, for Theo Jansen it is an all encompassing drive, a drive to originate a world filled with creatures of his own evolution. It seems that Jansen has fallen in love with a thought. Strandbeest! Each generation of his “Strandbeests” is subject to the forces of evolution, with successive forms moving forward, becoming more highly developed.

God Like Jansen has ignited his own evolution, creating creatures that grow into their environment, Jansen’s Strandbeests harness all that nature is able to throw at them. Jansen has been working for more than 20 years to create sculptures that move in eerily lifelike ways. Our favorite piece has the ability to carry passengers – Animaris Rhinozeros - a two ton giant which can be moved by one person via a clever system of impulses based on compressed air stored in soda bottles. The walking sculptures seem alive in motion, each leg articulating in such a way that the body is steady and level. The creatures incorporate primitive logic gates that are used to reverse the it’s direction if it senses danger, water or loose sand.
